City Council Votes 5-4 To Close Alley
The City Council voted Tuesday night to permanently close a section of the alley between Chamberlain and Bailey avenues.
The vote was 5-4 in favor of permanent closure, with Chairman Dan Page casting the tie breaking vote in favor of the closure. Voting in favor of the closure were Linda Bennett, John Franklin, Jr., Debbie Gaines, Leamon Pierce, and Dan Page. Voting against the closure were Jack Benson, Manuel Rico, Sally Robinson, and Marti Rutherford.
The alley has been a longstanding safety issue for residents of the 1500 block of Chamberlain Avenue and has caused a growing concern among residents in recent months. The section of the alley in question runs between two residential properties (click here for map), 1506 and 1508 Chamberlain Ave.

Highland Park Neighborhood Association Web Site Relaunch
We’re happy to announce that HighlandParkTN.com has been redesigned to better facilitate communications among HPNA members and friends. Of course, the new HighlandParkTN.com has much of the same things the old site had, but there are some new features we hope you'll like. As well as featuring a look that highlights the Arts & Crafts architectural influence of many of the homes in our neighborhood, some helpful Web site features include:
HPNA Blog
Our new web site has a web log, or blog, incorporated into the home page. Our blog is hosted for free by Chattablogs.com. The HPNA home page will have the most recent blog entries and if you click on the title, it will take you to the full blog story. What makes a blog unique is that at the end there’s a “comments” link that will allow you to leave a comment on the topic of the blog post, thus making a conversation on a given topic possible. Our blog is a more public forum and outsiders can read it through the Chattablogs.com site, which has a scrolling window that highlights the most recent post from all of it’s member blogs. We hope to not only communicate with each other more freely, but also draw interest in Highland Park from the Chattanooga community at large with this feature.
Streamlined E-mail Distribution List
Like the prior Web site, our new site has an e-mail distribution list for more private communication between just HP neighbors. However, we’ve decided to streamline things and have only one neighborhood e-mail distribution list, rather than the 'general' and 'safety' lists. We’re using a local hosting company and have high-hopes that the site and list will not go down as frequently as prior Web sites have.
To post a message to the distribution list, send an email to: neighbors@lists.highlandparktn.com
We’ve started with an old HPNA list and it may contain e-mail addresses that are no longer current, or addressees who have asked to be removed. We apologize if that includes you, but you’ll notice that at the bottom of an e-mail from the HPNA list an option to ‘unsubscribe’ yourself from the list. If we’ve wrongfully included you, please use the ‘unsubscribe’ option.
Also, there are very likely many people who are not on this list who want to be. Please send this to any friends or new neighbors that you feel would want to be on the HPNA e-mail distribution list. They can use the ‘subscribe’ option from the e-mail, or go to HighlandParkTN.com and click the "Click to subscribe..." button at the bottom of the home page.
Calendar of Events
The front page of HighlandParkTN.com has a calendar of events list to keep everyone up to date on what’s going on in The HP. Please e-mail us any events that need to be added to the calendar. You can use the ‘contact’ feature in the top bar of the Web site.
Advertising
We hope to make our new site self-sustaining and are offering three click-through banner ads for Highland Park related businesses. The price is very reasonable at only $25 for three months. We’ve already sold one space so if you’re interested contact us soon!
More to Come
We’ve been in a rush to get the redesigned site up and running, but have every intention of adding to it as necessary. We want it to be a resource we all use for all things HP. You’ll notice the commerce section lists contact info for Highland Park businesses or businesses of HP residents. Please send us additions if they fit those two categories.

General Meeting or Block Party? Yes!
You say po-tay-toe, I say po-tah-toe--either way, they make a great side dish for our General Meeting/Block Party! To take advantage of the weather while it's still relatively mild, the Highland Park Neighborhood Association General Meeting for Thursday, May 17th will be held outdoors at Tatum Park at 7 p.m.
Come for hotdogs with all the fixins and enjoy the company of your neighbors both old an new. By that, I mean those who've lived in The HP for a while or who just moved in, regardless of their age!
If you're of a mind to, feel free to bring a side dish or dessert to serve @ 35 people.
There will actually be a HPNA meeting, as well, so be sure to come on out because we've got lots of important things to discuss. Hope to see you there!
