HP - on its way to becoming more green!
HPNA applied for a grant from the Neighborhood Partners Program so that we might begin planting trees along several blocks of Highland Park. Great news!! We received a $5,600 award to make our project a reality!
Besides the obvious aesthetic impact of a greener neighborhood, trees are beneficial to the environment (I know, stating the obvious!) and the quality of our air and water. Chattanooga's City Forester, Gene Hyde, is quoted as saying "A healthy, growing tree is essentially a pollution-eating device and a mini-air conditioner."
More details about the tree plantings will be posted as we begin to put a formal plan together.
Thanks to Bill Jamieson for taking the lead role on this exciting project!

Higher Ground, Common Ground: The Story of Highland Park debuts at Thanksgiving dinner
Those that attended this year's HPNA Thanksgiving were the first to see Higher Ground, Common Ground: The Story of Highland Park. This 14-minute documentary was produced by Mary Barnett and sponsored by Allied Arts and The Chattanooga History Center. The story features commentary from the late Dr. Lee Roberson, Judith Schorr, Uneva Shaw, Lois Latimore, Geoff Tarr, and Scott Wilson about the evolution of our neighborhood.
Special thanks to the many residents that spoke with Mary as she gathered information about Highland Park in preparation for this project. And of course, thanks to Mary, Allied Arts and The Chattanooga History Center for capturing this story for us!
No matter how long/short you've lived in HP (or if you are thinking about moving to HP), you will appreciate and love this story. The video will be posted on this website in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned!

New Grocery Store in HP!
The Hawthorne and Main Grocery at 1800 Main St opened in October. As the name states it is on the corner of Hawthorne and Main Streets - in the old Ladies of Charity building. Contained within the store is Tienda Jalisco, a lunch counter specializing in Hispanic food. There is a grocery area and plenty of tables at which to sit. Hours are 10-9 Mon-Sat and 12-6 Sunday.
Let's make sure to support this local business and thank them for coming to our area!
