Boys and Girls Club Opens New Highland Park Facility Sept. 18
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chattanooga (BGCC) will celebrate the grand opening of its new 18,000 sq./ft. unit in Highland Park with a ribbon cutting on Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. The new building will be capable of serving more than 900 boys and girls, offering kids between the ages of six and eighteen a positive, safe and fun environment to enjoy.
The Highland Park facility is being dedicated to BGCC President, Michael Cranford, in honor of his nearly 40 years of service. As president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chattanooga, Mr. Cranford has been recognized nationally for his work in shaping the lives of Chattanooga's youth. Mr. Cranford was awarded the 2008 Thomas G. Garth Character and Courage Award - the highest honor the organization can bestow on a Club professional.
A plaque honoring Mr. Cranford's dedication to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chattanooga will be hung in the entrance of the new building during the grand opening ceremony, which will be attended by Roxanne Spillett, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Club of America.
The building will give kids access to social, cultural and physical education classes. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from UNUM, computer classes will be provided at a state-of-the-art technology lab to help kids bridge the digital divide and prepare for the future. Kids will also be able to participate in a highly successful homework assistance program called Power Hour, which has been supported by a $25,000 grant from Charity Projects Entertainment Fund (CPEF) and American Idol's charity effort, Idol Gives Back.
"To make a difference in the life of a child, BGCC established the Buy a Brick - Build a Life program," said Mr. Cranford. "This program was created to help us continue building the lives of all children, especially those from lower income families, by providing a positive, safe and fun environment where kids can realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens."
For more information about the dedication ceremony, or to learn how you can give to the Brick Program, call 423 266-6131 or visit www.bgccha.org.

Special Meeting to Discuss Girls Academy, June 17
HPNA will host a special meeting on Tuesday, June 17 at 6 p.m. at theNeighborhood Center about the proposed public charter for a Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy. The purpose of this meeting is to share information with residents about the charter school.
Established in 2007, the Young Women's Leadership Academy Foundation (YWLAF) was organized to sponsor the first public charter school for girls in Chattanooga - Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.
Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy will only serve girls who are attending or assigned to a school that is failing to meet its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) or girls who are testing below proficiency in math and/or language arts.
YWLAF will submit an application to the Hamilton County Department of Education. If approved, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy will open its doors in July 2009 with 6th and 9th grade students, with the ultimate goal of enrolling 350 girls in grades 6th - 12th.
The organizers feel that HP residents of Highland Park may be interested in the proposed school, since it could be located in our neighborhood.

Highland Park Tour of Homes Friday & Saturday
Friday Preview Event Added This Year
The 2008 Highland Park Tour of Homes will be held Friday evening, May 2, and Saturday, May 3. This year’s theme A Taste of Highland Park will be reflected in the addition of a Friday evening event that will give tour-goers the opportunity to visit four of the homes from the full Saturday tour and speak to the homeowners and contractors about the details of their homes restoration.
“This year’s tour has switched from the fall to the spring, because we feel that Spring better symbolizes the ongoing transition in Highland Park. Spring is a time of renewal and that’s what Highland Park is all about and thanks to our very active neighborhood association, we show no signs of slowing down,” said tour coordinator Jason Tablada.
Tour events on both days begin at Architectural Exchange at 1300 McCallie Ave. Tour tickets may be purchased at Architectural Exchange, Geno’s Salon, The Deli Man & The Cake Lady and Aunt Sue’s K-9 Bakery and Pet Supplies, all of which are located in Highland Park on McCallie Avenue.
A complimentary shuttle will be available both days.
